Dental Crowns: What are Its Different Types?

  • Jan 12 2017

Many people as of late are having several dental problems simply because they have not took care of their teeth when they were young. The good thing is, as the number of people suffering from dental problems increases, the number of dental solutions increases as well. One of these solutions is the use of dental crowns. What is a dental crown? This is a ‘cap’ having the shape of a tooth and it is placed over a tooth – to restore its shape, size and strength and to improve its appearance.

Dental crowns can be either permanent or temporary. Permanent crowns are usually made in a dental laboratory while temporary ones can be made in a dentist’s clinic. Crowns are available in several types and they are as follows.

Porcelain-fused-to-metal Crowns

These are best suited for back and front teeth as they slightly have the color of the natural teeth. However, it should be noted that in some cases, the metal which is underlying the porcelain of the crown can also appear as a dark line most particularly at the gum line. It should also be noted that the porcelain portion of the crown can chip.

All-Resin Crowns

These dental crowns are more affordable when compared with the other types. But then, these types when compared to the porcelain-fused-to-metal types are more at risk to fractures and they also wear down as time passes.

All-Ceramic/All-Porcelain Crowns

These dental crowns have the natural color of the tooth and thus, they are perfect for front teeth. They are also best suited for people who have allergies to metal. However, these are not as strong as the others.

Using dental crowns is indeed a good option when you have damaged teeth and yet you don’t want to lose them. Though crowns are offered by a lot of dentists, it is still recommended that you visit the right dentist. It would be better if you have some friends whom you can ask recommendations from.

Dental crowns are a bit expensive so it is always best to rely on a dentist whom you know will do the job right. Also, your dentist can help you decide on the right crowns for you.
